    • Small changes…Homework assignment for you.

Posted at 10:28 pm by myfoodiecall
      Feb 1st

I have been meaning to write about this for a while now but in my mind it seemed too lengthy and mentally taxing to write. I could go on and on about this subject ad nauseam… Seriously, it makes my head hurt to even think about condensing this. This discussion could be days long. Who has time for that. Here goes my oversimplification.

      Propaganda.

      The media.

      The diet industry.

      The wellness claims.

How much do you fall prey to the claims?

We all do, including myself. I found and bought myself Dark Chocolate Multi Grain Cheerios the other day because, “hey dark chocolate is better than regular chocolate, so it must have more nutritional benefits, right?”

It’s an easy trap to fall into and usually I can do pretty okay.  I am a firm believer in flipping the package. ALWAYS. Never believe the front. Although at home, upon further inspection, my Cheerios had zero dark chocolate. Yes, things could be worse. I could be buying Cocoa Pebbles or something, but you get the point.

Let’s start our mini lesson shall we?

I am pretty certain any educated adult can recognize when they are being sold to and enticed by a Kohl’s 2 day power sale, but how often do you recognize “diet” and “wellness” propaganda?

(P.S. There is a mini assignment at the end so be sure to pay attention, okay?)

       Ritz Crackers

Seems harmless, right? Says, whole wheat on the front. Claims "5g whole grain". What does that even mean??? They are going to the bank that you do not know or even care.

Seems harmless, right? Says “Whole Wheat” on the front. Claims “5g whole grain”. What does that even mean??? The Ritz marketing team is going to the bank that you do not know or even care. You say, “hey, its whole grain, it must be good for me, right?” Let’s flip the box and take a closer look…

Do you see anything whole wheat about this ingredient list?

Do you see anything whole wheat or whole grain in this ingredient list? Not sure about you, but I see a whole lotta partially hydrogenated this and corn syrup that. And this cracker is definitely more than 5 ingredients. We do not do this anymore right? We have evolved!

Lovely Chef Boyardee. Oh be still my heart.

Hilarious. Since when does slapping the label "whole grain" on Chef Boyardee make it healthy? I applaud their efforts, but seriously? I'd rather give my kids plain white pasta than this sodium-laden canned goop.

“Healthy butter”. How many of you have bought into this?

Olive oil butter. As if it magically makes it healthy. "Olive oil". Oh right, that's the stuff that's good for my heart, right?? Wrong. Media= 1 You= 0.

Olive oil butter. As if olive oil magically makes it healthy. “Oh right, that’s the stuff that’s good for my heart, right?? I think I’ll buy olive oil butter because it’s better for me than my old Promise spread that I use to buy.” Wrong.

Oh and this one is the best. Total identity crisis on this label.

This company is throwing every health claim at you at once. Words like "light" and "extra virgin olive oil" and "omega 3" and "Vitamin E". Wow, all of these things in one tub? Might as well eat it in one sitting.

This company is throwing every health claim at you at once. Words like “light” and “extra virgin olive oil” and “omega 3” and “Vitamin E”. Wow, all of these things in one tub of buttery spread? Might as well eat it in one sitting.

      So my homework assignment????

The next time you shop, find 5 diet and wellness products that are being marketed towards an unsuspecting consumer (you). Don’t worry, you can still buy your Omega 3 peanut butter, JUST BE AWARE.

Report back to me. Let’s be accountable.

I would love to hear what’s out there. It really is everywhere.

      Except the produce aisle…

    • Coke and a tooth. A tiny experiment with a tooth that should be going to the tooth fairy.

Posted at 8:00 pm by myfoodiecall
      Jan 26th

So a certain 10-year-old recently lost a tooth. Does he put it under his pillow? No. He wants to see what will happen if we let it soak in Coca-Cola. Okay. I have heard of these little soda experiments, but have never tried any of them. Although I am not really a soda drinker, I will have “cheat” soda every once in a while. Call it my version of living on the edge. Edgy, I know.

We all know soda is bad, bad, bad, but in the moment a craving hits us are we really thinking  (or caring) about how it rots our innards and leaches calcium from our bones? Not so much. There is just something about a cold can on a hot day.

Hmmm….let’s undo this craving shall we?

Seems innocent enough. A cute little can of Coke and a cute little clean tooth.

Here we have a cute little can of Coke and a cute little clean tooth. Seems innocent enough. To be honest, I am surprised this certain boy’s tooth is this clean. Brushing skills are not his strong suit.

      Let's do this.

      Let’s do this.

      Aforementioned tooth inserted into glass.

      Aforementioned tooth inserted into glass.

The My Foodie Call family steps away from the glass for 9 days...

The My Foodie Call family steps away from the glass for 9 days…

Check out this tooth after a week soaking in soda.

      Nastiness, anyone?

Looks like this tooth could belong to a 70-year-old Marlboro smoker...Nastiness, anyone?

Looks like this tooth could belong to an 80-year-old Marlboro smoker.

Although I wanted to put this tooth back in the soda for a bit longer and give it another week, the My Foodie Call member that was the rightful owner of this tooth scurried off to put it under his pillow. Does the tooth fairy accept brown teeth?

And this is just a tooth. Here are some other weird side effects in case you needed a reminder.

    • What I keep in my purse. Most days.

Posted at 8:00 pm by myfoodiecall
      Jan 13th

Who cares about my purse, right?

Stupid title, I know. Even worse image. See below:

      photo 1

      The aforementioned purse.

However, I get asked a lot what I eat… or what I feed the family…which is the reason for this blog.

What I keep in my purse. Most days.

      A grapefruit.

      The royal unveiling. A grapefruit.

      Why?

No, not because I dabble in the shenanigans of the grapefruit diet. That’s just madness.

And the My Foodie Call household does not diet, we eat clean. Or clean-ish. I have a soft spot for Menchies. Can’t believe they closed.

Anyhow, I keep this baby in my purse because yes, it’s super good for you. It lowers cholesterol and is loaded with antioxidants, etc. We know….

Those things are great and all, but this grapefruit is my vitamin C “insurance”.

Loads of vitamin C that you just can’t get from orange juice. As everyone knows, vitamin C boosts immunity (a good thing in the winter months), but in addition to this, the vain part of me likes my vitamin C it for those wrinkles that seem to be creeping up as I approach 40. Sigh. C’est la vie.

So this is my “effort”. Eat clean for health and vanity. 🙂

Yes, there are plenty of times when I am just not feeling my lonely “purse grapefruit” and would much rather a Luna bar, but the vitamin C from the grapefruit builds collagen, collagen production reduces wrinkles…you see where this is going?

In short, when I’m not feeling it?

The vain side of me says, “Eat your damn grapefruit!”

      and you should too.

    • Small changes…Start buying Ezekiel Bread

Posted at 8:00 pm by myfoodiecall

Have you whizzed past this at the grocery store?

Have you whizzed past this at the grocery store?

Have you ever seen this at the grocery store? It’s often times in the freezer case instead of the bread aisle.

Why? Well, it’s expensive. Most people have caught onto swapping out white bread for whole wheat, but we can do even better.

Your next step in your nutrition journey?

      Ezekiel Bread.

      Why?

      It’s sprouted bread. No flour.

For all you low-carb people out there, I’m talking to you.

      No flour.

Why should I care about sprouted bread? Isn’t my whole wheat bread good enough?

Yes, your whole wheat bread is better than white, but sprouted bread is best. In Ezekiel bread, sprouted kernels are ground up and made into bread. In whole wheat bread, kernels are ground into flour, then the flour is made into bread (with a bunch of other stuff) See the extra steps? More processing=less nutrients

Also, sprouted bread retains more nutrients, is easier to digest and has no added sugar.

Sorry, whole wheat flour. You can’t make that claim.

      But how does it taste?

True, it’s not going to be pillowy and dreamy like the Wonderbread from your youth, but give it a shot. Start slow and work it into your food rotation in your tastiest foods. Using it for french toast might be a good starting point.

For our family, I pretty much always have it in my freezer and will take slices out as needed and strategically use the bread when making “kid-friendly” foods like grilled cheese or peanut butter and fluff. Yes, I have tried to make the crew hummus and veggie sandwiches on Ezekiel. Not good.

I’ll leave you with this piece below that’s been floating around Facebook, because I think it’s so dead on:

    • Today is the most depressing day of the year.

Posted at 8:00 pm by myfoodiecall
      Jan 6th

Did you know that today is supposedly the most depressing day of the year? Google it.

      Reasons?

      A gajillion.

To summarize, it’s the post-holiday let down, ….first Monday back to work for most…Everyone is trying to recover from massive holiday spending, outside environment is barren and gross…
      Oh, and the weather BLOWS.

I do tread lightly with this last statement. I realize that I could live in other parts of the country that are getting hammered with snow, ice and wind chill factors that would cause me to hibernate until May.

But still. I can see why today and this time of year would just not be cool for many people.

Back to health stuff and the reason for my post.

Do you find that it is easier to eat healthy in the summer? I know I do. Let’s hang in there and bide our time until the rewards of summer are here.

Here are two eating tips for getting through until the “good stuff”.

      1) Eat clean, whole foods.

      What does this mean?

Shop for foods not in a package.

That do not have an ingredient list.

Like a banana. Or spinach. Or walnuts.

Extra hard to stick with whole foods in the winter months. All you want to do is curl up with a bag of chips and call it a day.

Eat clean, whole foods. Or just be more aware of your shopping cart and how many one ingredient foods you purchase. When you are at the grocery check out, how many packages are in your cart? Become aware. Maybe that could be the initial goal.

      2) When you do buy a package make sure you  “flip the box.”

Check the back and make sure it has less than 5 ingredients. Make sure you can pronounce those ingredients without contorting your mouth and sounding like an uneducated chemist. And you know those  “end of the aisle” sale items at the grocery store? Chances are if it is 10/$10, it is probably not a good choice.

      Recap.

      Two tips:

      1) Eat clean, whole foods.

      2) When you can’t, flip the package and shoot for 5 or less ingredients.

And this depressing day, week, month thing?

      Temporary.

      Onwards and upwards.

Vacations, summertime, and longer, lighter days are coming.

      ….And my personal fave, farmer’s markets. Yes-ah!
