Hey. Are you still caring about your kids’ lunches this late in the year? Are you still writing little love notes of positivity? If yes, I hate you and move on to the next blog. 😕

Today’s post is for people who seriously just can’t deal with the lunch bag process. No more ideas. Tapped out.

This is about the time of year where we wind up shoving a hunk of bread (the heel) in our kid’s lunch to stop the insanity and get to the real to-do’s of the night. DVR and wine.

If you are lacking lunch time inspiration, check out my non-fancy post on what I pack my kid. No Pinterest degree required.

It's not always nutritionally balanced, but I do my best.

      Non-fancy.

      A closer look.

First up, the bagel thin sandwich.

First up, the sandwich. Made on bagel thin bread.

Today we are doing almond butter.

Today lets do almond butter, shall we?

See nothing fancy. The bread is not shaped like a swan or anything cute you'd see on Pinterest.

      Let's add some honey...

Let’s add some honey so my kid doesn’t complain.

      honey.

Poor dear. Here’s your honey, honey.

      sandwich.

      Completed sandwich.

Some cut mango always goes over well. Apples although easy can sometimes be such a snooze...zzzz....

Time for some vitamins. Cut mango always goes over well when I am feeling ambitious. Ambitious in that I actually have to cut their fruit. Apples, although easy to pack, can sometimes be such a snooze for a kids lunch…zzzz…and I hate that they get tossed in the school’s compost bin instead of eaten. (Hey, I wasn’t born yesterday. I know what my kid does with his apple.)

Sliced red peppers. Check out the color on these. Awesome.

Pre-packaged cashews from Trader Joe's. Easy.

Next up? Pre-packaged cashews from Trader Joe’s. Healthy fat and protein in a cute little sealed bag. Easy.

Yogurt tube. Unsure why kids gravitate towards things entitled squashers, but in this case it works.

Yogurt tube. Protein and calcium. Unsure why kids gravitate toward things titled squishers, but in this case it works for me.

And the sweet treat is a large chocolate chip cookie that we baked.

And the sweet treat to round out our lunch bag?  A large, left-over chocolate chip cookie from our last batch.

See? Clearly, I have not broken a sweat.

      What I pack my kid.

      A recent lunch.

      Check it out.

Can someone make me lunch for a change?

      A closer look.

      Let's start with that sandwich.

      Let’s start with that sandwich.

I like this stuff. Pretty tasty.

Edamame hummus. This is pretty good too. Hey why, not swap out hummus for mayo the next time you are building a sandwich. Small changes, right?

I am grateful that I didn't over stuff. I have made that mistake many times.

      Strawberries. These never return home.

Pirate's Booty. Kids need their crunchy finger foods.

And the sweet treat. Chocolate with gogi berries.

Another installment of What I pack my kid.

      Lunchtime. Sigh. Woe is me.

      Lunchtime. Woe is me.

      Spinach Tortellini. No sauce.

Spinach tortellini. No sauce. Finger food, anyone?

Now in a perfect lunchbox these would be whole wheat. But if my kid is willing to bring something stuffed with spinach to school for lunch? I’ll take it.

      Sliced Red Pepper

Sliced red pepper. Yes. Another colored veggie. Amp up the vitamin C. Yes, red peppers have more vitamin C than oranges. Not sure why oranges get all of the glory.

Whole Grain Crackers and Raw Cashews

Whole grain crackers and cashews. Not much to say on this one other than that it is a heck of a lot better than cheeze-its.

      Apple Blueberry Fruit Leather

A fruit, that's not really a fruit, but not as bad as a fruit roll-up. A happy medium if you will....

       Dark Chocolate for dessert.

Home stretch for lunches. Almost winter vacation. Hanging in there. You should too.

Here is what I pack my kid.

My kids like stuff like this way better than sandwiches.

This is just whole wheat linguine with butter and nutritional yeast. Easy. You could make this blindfolded.

Don't you just love these mini peppers they sell now. Cute.

      What I pack my kid.

Do you have a child that hates sandwiches? I have a child that one day likes them, then hates them.

      Likes, hates. Likes, hates…..

      Deep sigh.

How can you not like sandwiches?

Here is an easy lunch that makes my kid happy, requires zero effort on my part, and doesn’t come in the forbidden yellow package (yes I am talking to you, gross Lunchables).

      No sandwich necessary.

Mini whole wheat bagel with Laughing Cow cheese wedge. Having three kids, I’ve learned that kids like to “spread things”. This cheese wedge ought to work.

      IMG_3044

      Fig Bar. Pretty self-explanatory.

Balancing the meal with fruit. Not slicing into wedges. Call the apple police.

Cherry tomatoes. These may or may not come back home. I never know with these babies. Depends on the day.

Chocolate squares. The sweet treat. Interesting how these never come home un-eaten.
